On 26 August 2026, a devastating flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems after an ice and rock collapse triggered a sudden surge of water and debris. Rasuwa was at the centre of the disaster, with the destruction extending downstream into Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun and other areas. Roads, bridges, homes, hydropower facilities and essential infrastructure were damaged, while families and communities suffered an immeasurable human loss.
Yet, it is important to understand Nepal geographically and not through a single disaster map. The affected river corridors are facing a serious recovery process, but the disaster has not closed Nepal as a whole. Many of Nepal’s major tourism destinations remain open, welcoming visitors with the warmth and hospitality that Nepal is known for.
Responsible Tourism Can Become Part of Nepal's Recovery Story
Choosing to visit an accessible part of Nepal during this period is not simply an alternative to a restricted destination; it can be a meaningful contribution to Nepal’s recovery.
Tourism supports a wide network of guides, porters, hotels, restaurants, transport providers, local businesses and families whose livelihoods depend on visitors. By traveling responsibly to destinations that are currently accessible, respecting restricted areas and following local guidance, travelers help keep this economic activity alive while communities rebuild.
Tourism cannot erase the impact of a major disaster, but it can strengthen livelihoods and sustain the local economies that depend on visitors. In this sense, a journey through Everest, Annapurna or other appropriate Himalayan regions can be more than a holiday; it can be an opportunity to experience Nepal responsibly while supporting local communities.
Where Can You Trek Right Now?
Our professional guides and local teams have been closely monitoring route conditions, and Based on current route assessments and available local information, several of Nepal’s major tourism destinations remain accessible and ready to welcome travelers. Here are the top places you can visit with us right now:
The Annapurna Region:
The Annapurna area looks magical after the rains and continues to offer remarkable trekking opportunities. You can enjoy the classic Annapurna Circuit, walk up to Annapurna Base Camp, or take a shorter, beautiful hike to Mardi Himal or Ghorepani Poon Hill. The region is particularly attractive because of its extraordinary geographical diversity, moving from green valleys and traditional mountain villages to high-altitude landscapes surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks. As with any mountain journey, route conditions should be checked before departure, particularly during and after periods of heavy rainfall.
The Everest Region:
The Everest region remains one of Nepal’s most iconic Himalayan destinations, offering an unforgettable combination of towering peaks, dramatic valleys, glacial landscapes and rich Sherpa culture. Whether you choose the legendary Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek or the stunning Gokyo Lakes Trek, the region provides a remarkable opportunity to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas. Along the journey, trekkers can enjoy spectacular mountain views, traditional Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries and the warm hospitality of local teahouses, small mountain lodges that provide trekkers with accommodation, meals and a place to rest along the route. For those looking to stand among some of the world’s highest mountains, the Everest region continues to offer an extraordinary Himalayan adventure.
The Manaslu Region:
The Manaslu region offers one of Nepal’s most spectacular and culturally rich Himalayan experiences, with dramatic mountain scenery, peaceful valleys and traditional villages. The region is known for Mount Manaslu, ancient Buddhist monasteries, diverse landscapes and the challenging Larkya La Pass. Trekking through Manaslu provides an opportunity to experience the quieter side of the Himalayas, where local traditions and mountain life remain deeply connected to the landscape. From lower green valleys to high-altitude Himalayan terrain, the region offers remarkable diversity for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
Lower Everest and Pikey Peak:
For travelers seeking a quieter Himalayan experience, the Lower Everest and Pikey Peak region offers beautiful mountain landscapes without the scale and intensity of the classic Everest Base Camp route. Pikey Peak is particularly known for panoramic views of the Himalayan range, traditional villages and a more peaceful trekking atmosphere. It provides an opportunity to experience the culture and landscapes of the Everest region through a shorter and less crowded Himalayan journey.
Khopra Danda:
For travelers looking for a quieter Himalayan experience, Khopra Danda offers a beautiful alternative within the Annapurna region. The trail passes through peaceful mountain villages, forests and open ridgelines, gradually leading to spectacular panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Compared with some of Nepal’s more crowded trekking routes, Khopra Danda provides a more tranquil connection with the mountains and local communities. As part of the Annapurna region, it offers travelers another opportunity to experience Nepal’s Himalayan beauty in a more tranquil setting.
Responsible Travel at GMT Adventures
At GMT Adventures, safety is not something added after an adventure has been planned; it is part of how the adventure is planned from the beginning. The company’s approach is built around experienced Himalayan leadership, local mountain knowledge and professional guiding, including NNMGA-certified guides, experienced climbing Sherpas, and extensive high-altitude rescue experience. Before each journey, route and weather conditions are considered carefully, and itineraries can be adjusted when conditions require it.
In practical terms, responsible mountain travel means:
● Assessing route conditions, weather, trails and transportation before departure
● Maintaining communication with local teams throughout the journey
● Remaining prepared to modify an itinerary when circumstances change
● Recognizing that no itinerary is more important than the well-being of the people undertaking it.
For GMT Adventures, inviting travelers back to Nepal does not mean asking them to ignore the risks created by recent events. It means encouraging them to travel intelligently, respectfully and responsibly. We believe that a good adventure is not measured only by reaching a destination, but also by completing the journey responsibly and leaving a positive impact on the communities and landscapes along the way.
We Are Ready to Welcome Tourists
The mountains remain, the cultural heritage continues to inspire, and the people of Nepal continue to welcome visitors with the warmth for which the country is known. At the same time, Nepal's recovery will require time, cooperation and continued support.
Nepal is not asking the world to forget what happened. It is showing the world that recovery and resilience can exist alongside grief. By choosing the right destination, respecting restricted areas and traveling with responsible operators, visitors can experience Nepal's extraordinary beauty while becoming part of its continuing recovery story.
Nepal has suffered, but Nepal has not stopped smiling. Its resilience is reflected not in forgetting what happened, but in continuing to rebuild, support one another and welcome the world responsibly.
